In 1849, Micah Weldon, an accidentally immortal alchemist's assistant, crosses paths with her former mentor's first test subject - a decidedly undeceased Meriwether Lewis - at the funeral of a likewise non-departed Edgar Allan Poe. Meri's revelations of the odd deaths and disappearances that betoken her erstwhile boss, Dr. Reynolds', presence lead the three misfits to form a tentative partnership to discover what he intends to do with his newly perfected elixir.
When they track Reynolds to the prosperous town of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, they find an undercurrent of evil flowing through the community - disappearing artists, corrupt officials, hidden boneyards, and an unknown mastermind behind it all.
